Undergraduate Wins Scholarship for Energy and Environmental Science

Hima Hassenruck-Gudipati, an undergraduate student in Mechanical Engineering has won the David E. Lumley Young Scientist Scholarship for Energy and Environmental Science. The scholarship is targeted to high school and undergraduate students and aims to "inspire today’s young minds to work on problems of global importance". Hima will be presenting a paper and participating in various student activities at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union. “Meeting some of the 'giants' of geoscience and getting their feedback on research is a big deal for these young students. We sometimes lose sight of this,” David E. Lumley said.

Professor Ravichandran to Receive 2013 Eringen Medal

Guruswami Ravichandran, John E. Goode, Jr., Professor of Aerospace and Professor of Mechanical Engineering as well as Director of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories, will be receiving the A. C. Eringen Medal at the 50th Annual Technical Meeting of the Society of Engineering Science.  At the meeting there will also be a symposium to honor Professor Ravichandran; covering the topics of shock and high-rate phenomena, active/shape-memory alloys, biological materials, composite materials, and digital image correlation. The A. C. Eringen Medal is awarded in recognition of sustained outstanding achievements in Engineering Science.

Professor Greer Awarded the Nano Letters Young Investigator Lectureship

Julia R. Greer, Professor of Materials Science and Mechanics, has been chosen as the 2013 awardee for the Nano Letters Young Investigator Lectureship. Professors Bhattacharya and Bruno Named 2013 SIAM Fellows

Kaushik Bhattacharya, Howell N. Tyson, Sr., Professor of Mechanics and Professor of Materials Science, and Oscar P. Bruno, Professor of Applied and Computational Mathematics, have been elected to the 2013 class of Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) fellows. They were nominated for their exemplary research as well as outstanding service to the community. Through their contributions, SIAM Fellows help advance the fields of applied mathematics and computational science.

Caltech has recognized four Engineering and Applied Science (EAS) graduates with the Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor regularly bestowed by the Institute. They are Y. C. L. Susan Wu (PhD '63 Aeronautics), Sébastien M. Candel (MS '69 and PhD '72 in Mechanical Engineering), Uma R. Chowdhry (MS '70 Engineering Science), and James R. Professors Murray and Ortiz Elected to the National Academy of Engineering

Richard M. Murray, Thomas E. and Doris Everhart Professor of Control and Dynamical Systems and Bioengineering, and Michael Ortiz, Dotty and Dick Hayman Professor of Aeronautics and Mechanical Engineering, have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Professor Murray was elected for contributions in control theory and networked control systems with applications to aerospace engineering, robotics, and autonomy. Professor Ortiz was elected for contributions to computational mechanics to advance the underpinnings of solid mechanics. [Caltech Release]

Professor Minnich Receives NSF CAREER Award

Austin Minnich, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, has been awarded the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award for his project, "Investigation of thermal phonon scattering processes in solids.” The CAREER program is NSF's most prestigious awards for junior faculty members. The level and 5-year duration of the awards are designed to enable awardees to develop careers as outstanding teacher-scholars. Awardees are chosen because they exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.

Professor Greer Receives NASA Research Grant and Early Career Awards

Julia R. Greer, Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Mechanics, is among a select group of 10 recipients of NASA's inaugural Space Technology Research Opportunities Early Career Faculty grants. She has also received the 2013 Early Career Faculty Fellow award from the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) and the Young Investigator's Medal from the Society of Engineering Science (SES). Winners of 2012 SES Graduate Student Paper Competition

Graduate students Andrew W. Richards and Zachary H. Aitken have won first and second place in the graduate student paper competition of the 49th Annual Meeting of the Society of Engineering Science.  This is an international conference that draws over 500 people from around the world, and the student competition is highly competitive.

Professor Ravichandran Elected Fellow of AAM

Guruswami Ravichandran, John E. Goode, Jr., Professor of Aerospace and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, who is also the Director of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories, has been elected as a 2012 Fellow of American Academy of Mechanics (AAM).  He recieved this honor for “his outstanding contributions to the understanding of mechanical behavior of materials under extreme loading environments.”
